The nature of gardening changed during the twentieth century, with many people starting to cultivate flowers as well as vegetables in their patches of land. Growing flowers for prize shows became a pastime for many keen gardeners.

However during the Second World War many flower beds were dug up in order to grow vegetables to help feed the family in times of rationing.
