"Looking for Eileen" film

Looking for Eileen

Historian George Fleming has been taking groups of primary school children on walks to learn about local Salisbury history for a number of years. He uses the life of Eileen O’Leary, a young Salisbury woman who died in the Titanic disaster, to teach children about how life was different for children growing up in the early 20th century to those growing up today.

George’s walks are always really popular with the pupils and teachers alike. During lockdown of 2020 and 2021 George was obviously unable to do the walks. Thanks to a grant from Wiltshire Council’s Area Board we have made a film which can be used in the classroom instead! It can also be used by families who want to learn more about this part of Salisbury.

  • Just saw George’s lovely little piece about Eileen’s life in Salisbury. My grandfather was the father of Eileen’s husband, so we have heard more about that side of the story of his early life in Donegal Ireland. Lovely to hear of Eileen’s side. Thank you George
